If you were married late in life, it may because one of you was so independent so long and grew accoustomed to “doing it your way”.  Its hard to share that which you work so hard to get – money and you don’t trust each other to spend it wisely.

Surprise!  Men and women differ on the topic of money and budget.

To a man, money is the way of providing for the family; things they want and need.  A male wants to work more in order to accomplish this. It makes him feel secure, respected and “feel like a man” – the bread winner.  Therefore, in many cases, he wants to make all the financial decisions, or at least most of them.  After all, its his money.

The woman of the household, wife, wants at least two things for the money; a source of security and a secure environment.  To her, money must be utilized to secure these things and her idea of managing the household money is quite different than her husbands.

Most couples fall into the above, and those who don’t, well, it isn’t too different, just for different reasons.

To the wife, money can mean two things, it can either mean security, because of her maternal instincts, and she would like to have a secure environment where she can take care of her family.  It can also mean independence, that she can provide for herself if her husband should not be able to for some reason (ie divorce).

The problem with money in a marriage arises when the discussion happens about how to spend the money and how to pay off debt.  High debt can threaten a marriage and often causes different reactions from each party.

The husbands immediate reaction to high debt or money issues is to worry. He might work extra hours or take another job.  This takes him away from the home and family, and the wife gets even more agitated.

The wife’s reaction is often anxiety; she feels her security is threatened or if she’s independent the anxiety might increase because she feel she has to depend on her husband more.

It can become a vicious circle.

Each blames the other.

Why?

Lack of communication.

What then can you do about it?
